Old Glenn Driving Loop
The Old Glenn Highway is a true country road. With its picturesque views and winding turns, touring along the Old Glenn is a relaxing and enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. Slow down and enjoy the country life for a day, as you drive the Old Glenn and see the heart of pioneer history in Alaska.
Eagle River Nature Center
As you begin your journey, you can stop in Eagle River, just 15 minutes outside of Anchorage, and check out the Eagle River Nature Center. Located at the end of Eagle River road, this facility has provided information and educational programs to residents and visitors since the 1980s. There are hiking trails that range from easy to difficult, beaver ponds, and a gift shop and information center. Driving on the Glenn Highway from Anchorage, take the Eagle River Loop Road Exit. At the end of the exit, turn right and go through two traffic lights, continuing straight. Take a right onto Eagle River road at the third light and continue on 12 miles until you reach the Nature Center. This can also be an excellent side-trip option if you want to spend more time here.
Old Glenn Exit
Just past Eklutna at Mile 28.6 is the Old Glenn Exit. This meandering course takes you through the back roads of Alaska and right next to Pioneer Peak. There are a variety of attractions along the road, from natural wonders and potential wildlife viewing to guided tours and activities.
Alaska Raceway Park
The Alaska Raceway Park is nestled at the foot of Pioneer Peak at Mile 10.4 of the Old Glenn. Races are held here nearly every weekend in the summer, and car enthusiasts can witness some of Alaska's best at the wheel.
Pyrahs Pioneer Peak U-Pick Farm
At Mile 11, turn onto Bodenburg Loop Road. Pyrahs Pioneer Peak U-Pick Farm sits at mile three of Bodenburg Loop. With up to 35 different kinds of produce to pick (weather dependent) this is a great way to get some fresh veggies for home. Prices are by the pound, and hours of operation vary by season.
Reindeer Farm
At Mile 11.5 of the Old Glenn stop in at the Reindeer Farm. You can take a guided tour, go horseback riding, explore local trails, even pet and feed a live reindeer.
Butte
The Butte township sits between Miles 9 and 16 of the Old Glenn. Athabascan Dena'ina Indians traversed from Eklutna to the Copper River in this historic area. It was originally the site of a large Dena'ina village called "Hutnaynut'l" or "Burnt Over." This became a farming area in 1917, with the first farm homesteaded by John Bodenburg. It remains a rural area today, and farming and farm product distribution are its main industry.
Matanuska River Park
Sitting at Mile 17, the Matanuska River Park has a host of trail systems and camping areas. Picnic tables, pavilions and an observation deck for river viewing are all available. The Old Glenn will bring you directly into the heart of Palmer. Stop at one of the many area restaurants for a bite to eat and fuel up before you circle onto the Glenn Highway and back to Anchorage.
